Ambitions for the future

The company is determined to lead in sustainable investment and is strongly committed to anticipating technological trends and to innovation.

This places ACCIONA Energía in an optimal position to continue leading progress towards a decarbonized and electrified economy, based on 100% clean sources.

Doubling growth

The energy sector is in a state of urgency, with an existing gap between the 2030 sustainable development goals and the historic crisis triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

An unprecedented boost has been unleashed for clean energies, further establishing their foundations as competitive and autonomous energies, and reaching investment records in 2022.

In 1993, ACCIONA Energía began building Spain's first wind farm in Tarifa (Cadiz); and in 1994 it started up El Perdón (Navarra), the oldest commercial wind farm in Spain.

“Today, ACCIONA Energía is already the world's seventh-largest operator by owned installed onshore wind capacity*, with a total of 8,751 MW”.

* Excluding operators in China (according to IHS Markit).

2022 Highlights

  • Strategic agreement with The Blue Circle, a platform to develop, build and operate a portfolio of projects in Southeast Asia, with 84 MW operational in Vietnam and 3.8 GW of wind projects under development in other strategic countries.
  • ACCIONA Energía remains strongly committed to floating wind technology and, to bolster its capabilities in this technology, in 2022 it became the first shareholder of Eolink, a start-up that has developed a pyramidal floating platform capable of orienting itself naturally according to the wind direction, therefore optimizing costs and maximizing its performance.

In 2001, the company built what at the time was the largest solar photovoltaic plant in Spain, with a capacity of 1.2 MWp. Today it is a leading international player, with 1,892 MW of photovoltaic power owned.

2022 Highlights

  • Cerro Dominador plant (110 MW) under construction in the Atacama Desert (Chile).
  • 49.9 MW biomass plant under construction in the municipality of Logrosán (Cáceres).

Green hydrogen is already being hailed as the key energy vector to achieve decarbonization and to meet the commitments set for 2050 in the fight against climate change.

2022 Highlights

  • In Spain and Portugal, the ACCIONA Plug joint venture continues to make progress in the pursuance of a broad electrolyzer portfolio.

Sale of 100% clean energy

ACCIONA Energía is recognized for having one of the largest portfolios of long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) worldwide.

In 2022, the company closed the third most clean energy contracts with corporations globally.

“ACCIONA has also reaffirmed its position as the largest 100% renewable independent sales company in Spain”. *

* According to data from the Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (National Markets and Competition Commission).

Self-consumption

In 2022, the company launched several projects related to self-consumption:

  • Vehicle-To-Grid (Balearic Islands): the first bidirectional electric vehicle charging network in Spain, which will allow the electricity stored in vehicle batteries to be recovered for self-consumption or to be injected back into the electricity system.
  • In collaboration with the municipality of San Juan del Puerto (Huelva): the first photovoltaic plant for collective self-consumption, which will supply electricity for 43 households living in energy poverty to reduce their electricity bills, and for 9 public buildings to reduce the municipal carbon footprint.

Energy services

The company designs and invests in solutions that optimize and reduce the energy consumption of public and private clients.

In 2022, the company entered the French market and started operations in Gijón, in what has been the largest energy services contract tendered in Spain to date, thus consolidating its leadership in energy services.
